Review: American Street

Hi friends and happy Monday! I hope you’re all doing well. Today I’m going to be posting my review of Ibi Zoboi’s novel American Street.

American Street

American Street by: Ibi Zoboi: Searching for a better life, Fabiola and her mother fly from Port-au-Prince, Haiti to Detroit, US with the expectations of new beginnings with their family. Only Fabiola’s mother doesn’t get very far, detained and sent to New Jersey, Fabiola goes to stay with her aunt and cousins doing everything in her power to set her mom free. This was a daunting tale of a girl and her mother searching for a better life in another country only to realize, life might not be so much better than they thought it would be. This was a really well told story that had the reader hooked from the start. The pacing was just right that it was hard to put down because the reader needed to know what was going to happen next. The integration of American and Haitian cultures was really fascinating to read about and it added this layer to the story that felt real and personal. The plot had so many ups and downs that the way this story ended was so shocking, it wasn’t seen coming. The way Zoboi wrapped it all up gave the story purpose and left it with an everything happens for a reason feel. These characters were so well crafted; they all felt so real, flawed, but also fierce. All of Zoboi’s characters had this fierceness to them that really made them bold and unforgettable. They were all strong-willed that the reader couldn’t help but be amazed by them. All of the character arcs were so well explored and deeply developed that helped us get a sense of who each character was individually, but also who they were as a whole unit. All in all, this was a beautifully written and invigorating read.
